BEFORE EXTRACTIONS
Your surgeon or dentist who will be performing the extractions will give you an outline of steps to follow prior to surgery and post surgery. It's very important you follow these steps, otherwise you may have complications. The steps usually include not eating or drinking after midnight, or fasting as your surgeon may call it. The morning of your surgery, you should assure that your mouth is as clean as possible, since you are going to have open wounds. I woke up, flossed my teeth really well, brushed my teeth for about 4-5 minutes, rinsed, and used mouthwash. You may not be able to brush for the first 24 hours after surgery so try to go in with a clean mouth.
My Tips
- Have multiple ice packs ready beforehand. I purchased hot/cold packs at Walmart in the pharmacy section that came with an adjustable strap. These are awesome for when you get home.
- Make sure to have someone with you to drop you off and pick you up. Also, make sure they will wait for you at the pharmacy to pick up your meds after extractions.
- Have beverages prepared. I suggest stocking up on juice. Try to get juice without any added sugar, in as pure a form as possible. If you have a juicer or a blender, try to get a couple recipes for smoothies and juices beforehand. You may not be able to chew for a while, and its probably best not to, because you could get food lodged in the extractions which is a great place for bacteria to grow.
- Gather movies, or something to keep you busy the first couple days, since you won't be allowed to move around too much.
