Almost a year post op

Hey guys,

Hard to believe it's been almost a year since I broke my face. Weird isn't it?
Time really flies when you're enjoying your new face.
I will do a proper before and after update at the one year mark. I still have to do my before and after video. I need to get on that soon.

Once again I love my followers and blogger friends for being there throughout this very long and challenging journey. Thanks guys for all the support and advice.

Lots of love!!

Terra

  1. You look great! I'm going through the same thing you did and your videos have been such a help for me. I have a slight underbite and I have an open bite. I just recently got braces and started a blog! I want to help me just like you helped me. Thank you.

  2. Thanks so much for your blog! I too have an open bite and have had 4 years of braces which included 4 tooth extractions (between ages 11-15). I am a tongue thruster and sucked my thumb until I was around 9 years old. My retainer broke so I stopped wearing it around the age of 18. I noticed my teeth moving and my bite opening back up when I was around 24. Went to ortho and was advised to do speech therapy to correct my swallowing. Well....fast forward several years and here I am 35 with Incognito braces to try to correct this open bite once again:( I'm not sure if it will be a permanent fix but I'm hoping that if my bite manages to close even slightly to normal that retainers will help me maintain a semi-normal bite. One of these days I just might blog about all of this also. Thanks so much for sharing all of your experience!

    1. Hi Andrea,
Fixing your tongue thrust is a very proactive method. I need to do this even with jaw surgery as I can still relapse. I think because I had the underbite in combination with the open bite braces alone wouldn't work but if you can avoid surgery then that's a good idea. I hope it all goes amazing for you. Sucks having braces as adults but once they're off it's the best feeling ever :)

  3. Hi, how are you? I had my jaw surgery more than a month ago and I was wondering if you had any issue with your back teeth? I feel like mine are crooked and it's painful when the surgeon put rubber bands on. Also, how many weeks do you have to wait until seeing the orthodontist?

    1. Hi, congrats on being post op. I had all kinds of pain with my teeth post op. So much change to the structure will put a lot of tension on your teeth. I saw my ortho 3 weeks post op but he couldn't do anything because I was still looking pretty rough. He ended up having me back a couple weeks later for an adjustment and lots of rubber bands.

  4. Hi Terra, I just wanted to say thank you for your blog! I found it yesterday and I can't stop reading. Friday I went for my surgery consult and found out I will need double jaw surgery for my under bite and open bite (almost exactly the same as you!) so it is super calming to see your progress. I have known I needed the surgery since I was 17, and I'm 32 now - not so excited about being a thirty-something brace face. Can you tell me if you have a break down of cost anywhere? That is the one thing I'm freaking out about because I don't think insurance will cover it ... Aaaah!

    1. Hi Brenna,
That's exciting news that you're getting the ball rolling. I tried to put it off as long as I could but now I'm really glad I had the surgery done. You'll be so happy with the results. I believe I did a post on costs but to summarize this is a little breakdown.
I live in Toronto, Canada so I am blessed to have provincial healthcare cover the surgery itself.I know surgery costs vary a lot depending on the surgeon and the region.
Although my surgery was covered I had to pay surgical fees which were $3500 for all the in office appointments I had with my surgeon. I also paid $7000 for braces and additional costs for extractions. I've had 8 extractions in total over the past decade. I'll try to find the post I did on surgery costs. Not sure exactly where you live but I found searching through jaw surgery forums gave me a lot of answers as to costs in specific regions and with different surgeons. I find in southern Ontario costs are generally the same no matter what surgeon you go to so I can imagine it might be the same for other regions. You can email me if you have any questions or if you want to talk jaw surgery. terraiarossi@gmail.com
