Bite just isn't opening like it should

I took a picture today to see how my bite has changed and it for sure isn't near where my surgeon wants it for surgery.

This is my bite a few months ago.....

If anything my bite looks more open in Feb. My surgeon wants 4mm anterior open bite in order to do double jaw surgery. If you guys remember, I started out with about a 4mm open bite. Why my orthodontist closed it? I have no clue. Now we're going back and opened the bite again and its taking forever!

This was my anterior open bite right after having the braces put on, pretty much none of my teeth touched except the back molars.

It's all just weird to me, and as much as it's stressing me out, I'm trying not to feel so stressed. I remember last summer when my bite started closing with the braces I was getting worried, everyone sort of reassured me that it was normal, but when I saw my surgeon a couple months ago he wasn't happy at all with it, he wanted everything opened more than it had originally been, and he had wanted my orthodontist to send me in much earlier to make sure we were progressing in the right direction.
I'm not super happy about this, and a part of me feels sort of mislead by my specialists. I don'y have any type of coverage with my braces and they were paid for in full, so they pretty much had me at their disposal from day one. With my full treatment paid for up front I didn't really have any options to look around once things started to change.

  1. Hang in there! They are professionals, just trust in them. You still have plenty of time before the surgery date and I'm sure they know you'll be ready by then otherwise they wouldn't have booked it. I know you were hoping for an earlier one, but I'd try not to think about that and if it does happen, consider it a bonus!

    1. I would trust them if my ortho didn't do the opposite of what the surgeon asked for.
I feel like my ortho is just doing what he wants and it's not what my surgeon wants.

    1. My surgeon let me book it for october in hopes that my ortho would have my bite open by then, but it's been 3 months and my bite hasn't opened at all. Knowing my surgeon he'll make me push it back if my bite isn't exactly where he wants it.

  3. Keep it up. Best of luck. I'm in the same way of you, waiting for double jaw surgery. I know there are difficult moments and this journey is kinda stressful, and sometimes the "specialist" do weird things. Anyway, all is gonna be OK!

    1. Thanks, I really hope no one else falls into this problem, apparently I'm the 10% where the ortho does the opposite of what the surgeon wants. The ortho blames it on this or that, but my surgeon assured me that my ortho could easily open my bite to where he wants it, unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case.

  4. Terra, this breaks my heart. I was going to ask you if your ortho would give you a discount for his screw-up, but I just read that you paid in full. Have you lost all trust in your ortho? Maybe you could transfer to another ortho in that office. I really hope your bite starts to open up soon!

  5. oh my gosh this is so frustrating! I'm so sorry terra hang in there:) and ask lots of questions and tell your orthodontist you are worried by the lack of movement, I can understand why you're worried because I thought they had quite a lot of control over how your teeth move and how fast. I'm sure it'll all come right in the end and I so hope that you can go to Australia as you're planning:) I'm sure you will! xoxo

  6. Hi Terra,
It's better to be late than sorry. Your surgeon is right on the money, your bite should be made worse not better for surgery. Have you discussed your concerns with your ortho? What does he say regarding this? I think your surgeon is awesome for standing up for what he believes and not just siding with your ortho. Either way your a smart cookie with a lot of knowledge, I know you'll figure it out.
